What is Teen Therapy?
Teen therapy, also called teen counseling, is a supportive space designed to help adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 navigate the real challenges of growing up. This form of counseling provides a safe and confidential environment for teens to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns. The goal is to facilitate personal growth and emotional well-being by addressing issues such as anxiety, depression, pornography use, peer pressure, and identity exploration.
Through evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and other proven modalities, teens can develop healthier coping strategies, improve communication skills, and build resilience. Whether a teen is struggling with emotional difficulties or simply looking for guidance, teen therapy and counseling serve as a valuable resource for fostering a positive transition into adulthood.
Is Your Teen Struggling to Find Balance?
When your teen is overwhelmed, it can feel like they're stuck on an emotional rollercoaster, impacting their relationships and school life. This imbalance can lead to a disconnect from family and friends, making everyday interactions challenging and stressful.
Common reasons teens and parents reach out to us:
- Anxiety and stress
- Depression or persistent sadness
- Life transitions (school changes, family changes, moving)
- Pornography
- Relationship difficulties with peers or family
- Bullying or social struggles
- Defiance or difficulty taking direction

In-Person vs. Online Teen Therapy: What We Recommend
Most of our teen therapy sessions are held in-person at our Pleasant Grove, Utah office, and here is why that matters:
Reading body language and facial expressions is an important part of working with teens. In-person sessions allow our counselors to pick up on nonverbal cues that are easy to miss on a screen. Our counselors also use hands-on tools like whiteboards to work through problems in real time, which is difficult to replicate in a virtual setting. There are also fewer distractions when a teen comes into the office versus joining a session from home.
That said, online teen therapy is available for families who need flexibility. We will always work with you to find what fits best. Whether in-person or online, the goal stays the same: helping your teen feel heard, understood, and equipped to move forward.

Discover the Path to Emotional Wellness
Increased Self-Awareness: Teens who understand themselves better make clearer decisions, build a stronger sense of identity, and feel more confident navigating the pressures of adolescence.
Enhanced Communication Skills: Learning to express thoughts and feelings clearly strengthens relationships with family and peers, and gives teens the tools to work through conflict rather than shut down.
Strengthened Coping Mechanisms: Resilience is a skill, not a personality trait. Developing it helps teens manage stress and navigate life's challenges with more confidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Some common signs include persistent withdrawal from family or friends, changes in sleep patterns, outbursts or increased anger, difficulty at school, ongoing sadness, or defiance that feels out of proportion to the situation. If you have noticed changes that concern you, reaching out for a consultation is always a good first step. You do not need to wait for a crisis.
Start by normalizing it. Let your teen know that therapy is a place to talk through hard things with someone who is not going to judge them. Emphasize that they will have a say in what happens in sessions, including how much (if any) faith is included. Framing it as their space, not something being done to them, can make a big difference. If they are resistant, a brief introduction session with no commitment required can help ease them in.
For most teens, in-person therapy offers advantages that are hard to replicate online. Counselors can read body language, use tools like whiteboards, and create an environment with fewer distractions than home. However, online teen therapy is an effective option for families who face scheduling challenges, live farther from our office, or have a teen who feels anxious about attending in‑person sessions.
That is entirely up to your teen and your family. In the first session, we ask each client how much faith they want included: none, some, or a lot. We then honor that preference throughout our work together. Rays of Hope serves both LDS and non-LDS families, and we adjust our approach accordingly. Faith integration is never assumed and never forced.
We provide individual teen counseling for adolescents ages 12 to 18, teen anxiety therapy, teen depression counseling, support for issues like pornography and bullying, and teen group therapy. Sessions are primarily in-person at our Pleasant Grove, Utah location, with online options available. All of our counselors are vetted and experienced in working with adolescents.
