What Is Anger Management Counseling?

Anger management counseling is a supportive, confidential space to understand what triggers your anger and to build healthier ways of responding to it. Rather than teaching you to suppress your emotions, it helps you recognize the thoughts, situations, and stress points that lead to explosive reactions, and gives you practical tools to pause, process, and respond differently.

At Rays of Hope, we combine evidence-based approaches like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based skills with as much faith integration as you'd like. Many of the families we work with are LDS or Christian and want their counseling to reflect their values; others prefer a secular approach. Either way, the goal is the same: helping you respond with patience instead of regret.

Is Anger Straining Your Relationships?

When anger feels bigger than you are, it can be hard to see a way out. Outbursts create distance in a marriage, tension with kids, and a cycle of guilt that's exhausting to carry, especially when it doesn't match who you want to be or the faith you hold.

Common reasons people reach out to us:

  • Frequent outbursts or explosive reactions
  • Ongoing tension or conflict in marriage or with children
  • Guilt or shame after losing control
  • Feeling triggered by stress at home or work
  • Wanting to break a cycle they grew up with
  • Concern that anger is affecting their walk of faith

A Faith-Integrated Path to Lasting Change

At Rays of Hope, every counselor is licensed, experienced, and trained to help clients build lasting emotional regulation skills, not just cope for a week and slide back into old patterns.

We believe healing should never feel like judgment. In your first session, we ask how much faith you'd like included: none, some, or a lot, and we honor that preference throughout our work together. Whether you're LDS, another Christian tradition, or prefer a secular approach, our goal is the same: helping you find a calmer, more patient version of yourself.

Support for Your Whole Family

We also offer marriage and family counseling, so anger management can be part of a bigger plan to restore peace at home.

What to Expect When You Reach Out

Your first session is about understanding, not diagnosing. We'll talk through what triggers your anger, how it's been showing up in your relationships, and what you want to feel different by the time we're done working together.

Anger management counseling isn't just for people who have been "in trouble" because of their anger. Many of our clients come to us proactively, they've noticed a pattern and want to address it before it damages a relationship they care about.

Most sessions are held in person at our Pleasant Grove, Utah office, with online options available for families who need scheduling flexibility.

Every counselor at Rays of Hope is licensed and experienced, and several specialize in the evidence-based approaches most effective for anger and emotional regulation work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common signs include frequent yelling or outbursts, feeling out of control when angry, saying or doing things you regret afterward, ongoing conflict with a spouse or children, or a pattern of anger you recognize from your own upbringing that you don't want to repeat. If any of this sounds familiar, reaching out for a consultation is a good first step. You do not need to wait for a crisis.

That's entirely up to you. In your first session, we ask how much faith you'd like included: none, some, or a lot, and we honor that preference throughout your care. Rays of Hope serves both LDS and non-LDS families, and faith integration is never assumed or forced.

Not at all. While some clients come to us after a difficult incident, many others reach out proactively because they've noticed a pattern in themselves and want to change it before it affects a marriage, a relationship with their kids, or their walk of faith.

Every situation is different, but most clients see meaningful progress within a series of weekly sessions as they build awareness of their triggers and practice new responses. Your counselor will work with you to set a pace and timeline that fits your goals.

Yes. Anger often affects an entire household, so we also offer marital counseling and family-focused sessions. Many clients combine individual anger management work with couples or family sessions for a more complete path forward.
